How to care for delicate fabrics: silk, satin and guipure

Incorrect washing or drying can permanently damage the appearance of a garment. To ensure your favourite pieces retain their shape, colour and texture over time, it’s important to understand the characteristics of each fabric and follow a few simple care rules.

Caring for silk
Silk is considered one of the most delicate fabrics. Its fibres are sensitive to high temperatures, harsh detergents and mechanical stress. The best option is hand washing in cool water at a temperature no higher than 30°C. For cleansing, it’s advisable to use detergents specifically designed for silk or mild gels without bleach. The garment should not be rubbed or wrung out; gentle rinsing in clean water is sufficient.

Silk items should be dried flat, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Machine spinning is not recommended, as it can damage the fibre structure. Iron silk while it is slightly damp, on the reverse side and at the lowest temperature setting, using the “silk” or “delicates” mode.

Satin care essentials
Satin is known for its smooth surface and soft sheen. Despite its denser structure compared to silk, it also requires gentle handling. Satin garments can be washed by hand or in a washing machine, selecting a delicate cycle with low spin speeds. The water temperature should not exceed 40°C, as higher temperatures may cause the fabric to lose its shine and elasticity.

When washing satin, use mild detergents and avoid fabric softeners with strong fragrances. It’s best to air-dry the garments naturally, carefully smoothing the fabric. For ironing, a medium heat setting is recommended, always on the reverse side, to help preserve the fabric’s smooth finish and appearance.

Caring for guipure
Guipure is a lace fabric with an openwork structure that can be easily damaged if handled carelessly. Hand washing in cool water with gentle detergents is the preferred method. If a washing machine is used, the garment should be placed in a protective laundry bag and washed on the most delicate cycle.

Guipure should never be twisted or heavily spun. After washing, gently blot the fabric with a towel to remove excess moisture. Dry flat on an even surface. Iron guipure with extreme care, using steam or the lowest heat setting, and, if necessary, through a thin pressing cloth.

General care recommendations
All delicate fabrics react poorly to bleach, stain removers and harsh powders. It’s best to store these items separately from garments with zips or hooks to prevent snagging. Following these simple guidelines will help preserve the beauty and quality of delicate fabrics for years to come.
