How to care for lace lingerie so it lasts longer

Lace lingerie is more than just a wardrobe staple - it’s a blend of aesthetics, comfort and femininity. Delicate threadwork, intricate patterns and fine fabrics require a special approach. Improper care can lead to loss of shape, stretching or damage to the lace. To ensure your favourite sets continue to delight you for as long as possible, it’s important to follow a few simple yet effective rules.

Gentle washing is the foundation of longevity
The key rule when caring for lace lingerie is gentle washing. Hand washing in cool water (no higher than 30°C) is considered the ideal option. Hot water damages elastic fibres and weakens the fabric. It’s best to use mild detergents specifically designed for delicate fabrics or lingerie. Regular washing powders may contain harsh components that can compromise the structure of lace.

If hand washing isn’t possible, a washing machine can be used - but only on a delicate cycle. Lingerie should always be placed in a dedicated laundry bag to protect it from snagging and friction against other items. Spinning should be avoided altogether or set to the lowest possible speed.

Drying without risk
After washing, lace lingerie should never be wrung out. Simply gently blot it with a towel to remove excess moisture. Items should be dried flat on a horizontal surface, carefully reshaped. Radiators, heaters and direct sunlight are strictly off-limits, as heat and UV exposure negatively affect elasticity and colour.

Using a tumble dryer for lace lingerie is strongly discouraged. Even the gentlest setting can cause shrinkage and deformation.

Storage matters
Even with proper washing, lingerie can quickly lose its appearance if stored incorrectly. Bras with moulded cups should be stored flat, without turning them inside out or nesting them inside one another. This helps maintain their shape and prevents creasing. Lace briefs and sets should be kept separate from garments with zips, hooks or rough hardware.

Ideally, lingerie should have its own drawer or organiser. This is not only convenient, but also protects delicate items from damage.

Additional care tips
To extend the life of lace lingerie, it’s advisable to rotate between several sets rather than wearing the same one every day. Elastic fibres need time to recover in order to retain their resilience. It’s also worth paying attention to fabric composition: pieces with a higher content of natural fibres require especially gentle handling.

Perfume, body creams and oils are best applied before putting on lingerie, as they can leave stains and break down fabric fibres.

Caring for lace lingerie doesn’t require much effort, but it does require mindfulness. Gentle washing, proper drying and careful storage help preserve the beauty, shape and comfort of your pieces over time. By paying attention to these details, you not only extend the life of your lingerie, but also maintain the pleasure of wearing it.
