Sports Bras - Choosing the Right Level of Support for Different Types of Sport

Unlike everyday lingerie, its role is not decorative but purely functional: it supports the bust during movement, reduces strain on ligaments and ensures comfort throughout a workout. An incorrectly chosen level of support can lead to discomfort, pain and even tissue stretching, which is why selecting a sports bra should always take the type of physical activity into account.

Why the level of support matters
During movement, the bust shifts in multiple directions, especially during running and jumping. Without sufficient support, the Cooper’s ligaments responsible for maintaining breast shape are exposed to constant stretching. A sports bra limits excessive movement, distributes load evenly and helps preserve the bust’s shape over time. The more intense and dynamic the workout, the higher the level of support required.

Low-support bras
Styles with minimal support are suitable for calm, controlled activities. Yoga, Pilates, stretching, meditation and walking place little strain on the bust, so freedom of movement and comfort take priority. These bras typically feature soft cups, thin straps and a flexible underband. They are ideal for smaller busts and low-intensity workouts.

Medium-support bras
Bras with medium support are considered the most versatile. They are well suited to fitness classes, dance, strength training without excessive jumping, cycling and elliptical workouts. These designs provide reliable support without restricting movement. They usually feature wider straps, a firm elastic underband and reinforced cup areas, making them an excellent choice for most gym-based activities.

High-support bras
Running, cross-training, jumping, aerobics and team sports require maximum support. High-support sports bras minimise bust movement in all directions, reducing strain on the back and shoulders. These styles are characterised by a snug fit, reinforced seams, wide straps and sometimes additional fastenings. They are particularly important for women with a fuller bust, where insufficient support can lead to discomfort and pain.

Fit and materials
Regardless of the level of support, a sports bra should fit firmly without feeling restrictive. The underband provides the main support, so it should stay in place during movement. Modern performance fabrics wick away moisture, allow the skin to breathe and help prevent chafing. Seamless designs and well-finished edges significantly enhance comfort during training.

An individual approach
When choosing a sports bra, it is important to consider not only the type of sport, but also body shape, bust size and personal comfort. Ideally, the bra should be tried on and tested with a few movements to assess the level of support.

A well-chosen sports bra makes training safer, more comfortable and more effective. By taking activity level and individual needs into account, it is easy to find a model that offers reliable support for any fitness goal.
