Traditions: what the bride’s garter symbolises

This small element of the bridal look often raises questions: why it is worn, where the custom originated and what it truly represents. Although today the garter is often seen as a decorative detail, its symbolism is rooted in a distant past.

The history of the garter dates back to medieval Europe. At that time, weddings were surrounded by superstition, and guests sought to touch the bride’s attire, believing it would bring good fortune. To prevent damage to the gown, the custom of tossing the garter gradually emerged as a symbol of prosperity and a happy marriage. In this way, the accessory became a symbolic substitute for pieces of the bridal outfit and took on a talismanic role.

Traditionally, the garter is associated with luck and success in love. It was believed that the man who caught it would soon meet his future partner or get married. In this sense, the garter became the counterpart to the bridal bouquet, which is tossed to unmarried women. Both rituals symbolise the passing on of happiness, love and marital good fortune to those awaiting their own union.

The placement of the garter also carries meaning. Worn on the bride’s leg, close to the heart and intimate area, it symbolises femininity, allure and mystery. The garter highlights a woman’s transition into a new role - from bride to wife. In some cultures, it was also linked to purity, fidelity and readiness for married life.

The colour of the garter holds symbolic significance as well. White is considered the classic choice, representing innocence, sincerity and the beginning of a new life chapter. A blue garter is connected to the age-old wedding tradition of “something blue” and symbolises loyalty, calm and harmony in marriage. Red tones are less common, but they may signify passion, energy and strong emotional bonds between spouses.

Over time, the removal of the garter became part of the wedding reception. The groom removes it from the bride’s leg and tosses it to unmarried men, turning an ancient custom into a light-hearted and entertaining moment. Modern couples, however, often adapt this tradition to suit their preferences. Some brides choose to wear two garters: one for tossing and another kept as a sentimental keepsake from the wedding day.

Today, the bride’s garter is seen less as a mandatory attribute and more as a personal choice and a way to express individuality. It can be simple and understated or adorned with lace, embroidery and decorative details. Yet its symbolic meaning remains - a sign of happiness, love and the beginning of a shared family story.

The bride’s garter is more than just an ornament; it is a part of wedding culture where history, tradition and romance intertwine. Understanding its symbolism allows this delicate accessory to be viewed in a new light and given a deeper, more personal meaning on the day a family is created.
